USAA Icon Illustration:
Design Language System

"The USAA Illustrator System is meant to complement
USAA's established photography, typography, language and form."

The USAA Reveille Illustrators are a small group of illustrators dedicated to creating illustrations and iconography for the digital USAA experience. Each line of business has it’s own set of Illustrators (Bank, P&C, Marketing, LifeCo, etc.) I currently serve as the go-to illustrator for all Enterprise experiences at USAA. Each illustration adheres to very strict guidelines and must feel as though it was crafted by the same hands. We aim for them to be bold, iconographic and emotionally neutral. We remove any site of people and focus solely on illustrating icons for optimal inclusion and emotional context. All illustrations begin at the sketching phase, then either move on to critique by other fellow illustrators or developed into a rough vector of several choices. Once ideas have been heavily vetted by other illustrators and the illustration lead, the icon is finalized and published into the USAA Design DSM for use by other UX Teams.

01. Cross-collaborative Facilitation

Part of being a DLS Illustrator was working with partners in our project focus (Enterprise Security for me) to create icons that aligned with the partners vision and our own DLS system.

02. Illustration

Illustrations had to be done as multiple sketches first, then evolved into vector and several design critiques with other illustrators and the lead illustrator.

03. Design Language System

As part of the Design Language team, we had to abide by the current USAA Design Language and provide new contributions to it.
